Belonging and Healing - Creating awesomeness for yourself and others

Belonging is a basic human need. We all need to feel like we belong.

Ubuntu is an African spiritual healing journey followed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former South African President Nelson Mandela. In Belonging and Healing: Creating Awesomeness for Yourself and Others, Dr. Dave Cornelius draws upon the powerful philosophy of Ubuntu to deliver a simple roadmap to building positive teams and relationships, improving engagement and performance.

In Belonging and Healing: Creating Awesomeness for Yourself and Others you will learn:

  • The importance of belonging and why we all need to belong somewhere
  • The language of belonging and how you can adjust your language to be more inclusive
  • How Ubuntu can help you develop successful organizations
  • How Ubuntu conquers narcissism and microaggressions
  • How to develop and implement a vision and practice for belonging

Belonging and Healing Podcast Episodes

A special thank you to Tracy Treacy, founder of D & S Healing Center, for sharing her knowledge in the KnolShare with Dr. Dave podcasts on the topics of  belonging and healing covered in this book. Tracy is my lifelong sister, friend, and partner in healing. We found a project that we can collaborate on to bring about healing for others.

Gratitude to Nobantu Mpotulo from Ubuntu Coaching in South Africa for sharing her knowledge about the practice of Ubuntu. Nobantu helped me understand the foundational premise that Ubuntu is the way of being, a way of life that takes into consideration the importance of interconnection, the importance of working with others, and the importance of seeing the good in others.

A belonging strategy will help a community or organization to create a vision that can be realized and changed when necessary. Strategy is a general direction set for a community, organization, or group to achieve a desired state in the future. The belonging strategy should be measurable, provide benefits to its intended recipients, achievable, and shareable. The approach to defining the belonging strategy will use the IDEO strategic process map.

Somatic healing experiences engage the body and draw from the basic functions of the nervous system in treatment. Somatic therapy operates off the idea that what happens to you in your life is stored not only in your mind but also in your body.

The fundamental meaning of Ubuntu is that things we learn, and experience are based on relationships we have with other people. People have meaning because we learn to love others as we love ourselves. Each interaction is a gift and enriches our lives. Ubuntu is an African spiritual healing journey. Ubuntu is about community, integrity, and honesty; it's really the spirit of togetherness.

Ubuntu trumps narcissism. Ubuntu by design is about equality between each person and not one person being superior to the other. Narcissism contradicts the goals of Ubuntu, which is about oneness between people and not for the edification of the individual.

Microaggressions are subtle statements and actions that imply a bias against a person based on gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. The practice of Ubuntu is a remedy to this disparity to encourage us to go far together and remove the microaggressions that ultimately limit progress of non-white people.

Practicing the habit of equality with people in your family, community, and organization will lead to gratitude that relieves the stresses of being overwhelmed by narcissism, microaggression, apathy, and fear.

How powerful is it to know that your people already have what it takes to win? The quality of relationships with partners, peers, and leaders is built on the premise that we are equals and we are cheering for the success of all.

We experience belonging when there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity within a specific group. Since birth, most humans have been guided to belong to our family and community. This behavior is not limited to humans but includes some mammals that are part of the animal kingdom.

Everyone needs belonging in a community or organization. Trevor Noah, the South African comedian and host of The Daily Show, struggled with belonging because of his bi-racial identity growing up in South Africa. In his book, Born a Crime, he shared about the struggles of finding belonging because of the laws in South Africa that could have landed him in an orphanage.

The powerful words are helpful to uplift our spirit and make us feel kindness. A simple expression of “I value you because your partnership in our collaboration helps me with my blind spots” informs an individual of the value contributed in the partnership at work or home.

Belonging is essential to our human existence. Instinctually, our need to belong draws us into relationships that are helpful for spiritual, emotional, and physical development. The experience of healthy belonging in a positive relationship and environment helps us to feel valued. Some relationships may not always provide the beneficial experiences that we desire and can be deadly. Belonging can be a generative experience that is beneficial for everyone.
